  • Government of India Reiterate Guidelines for Tourists and Satellite Phones

The Government of India have reiterated their guidelines for tourists planning to take satellite phones to India. Tourists are not allowed to bring satellite phones into India but after several violations of these rules have been discovered the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi have issued a statement to remind everyone that they are not permitted: "As per the guidelines issued by Government of India, foreigners on tourist visas are not allowed to carry satellite phones to India. Therefore, it is requested that the foreigners intending to visit India should not carry satellite phones with them while travelling to India," the mission said in a media statement issued on Monday. India tightened their rules on satellite phones and trackers after the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai as they found the terrorists had used satellite phones to communicate without being tracked by government agencies. Unless you have special permits to carry satellite phones in India they will be confiscated and this reminder should help tourists to avoid any inconvenience that this may cause. For more information about where in the world you can or cannot use satellite phones, including Iridium satellite phones please call Orbital SatCom on +1 (305) 560-5355.

  • Yachtsman is Rescued from Sinking Yacht Thanks to Satellite Tracker

Last week, a 48-year-old yachtsman got into trouble 100 nautical miles West of Kaitaia when his yacht began taking on water at an alarming rate. Luckily the sailor had both an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon and a satellite tracker on board and was able to alert the Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand. He set off his Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon and then evacuated his yacht for its life raft and began contacting his wife via a 2-way messaging satellite tracking device that is believed to have been a DeLorme inReach satellite tracker. This line of communication ensured that the emergency responders were able to precisely locate the life raft whilst his wife kept in constant contact with him through the 2-way messaging function, ensuring he was in a safe and stable condition at all times. The yacht sank quickly but the sailor was rescued by helicopter around three hours later. 'He did all the right things, had all the right equipment, and did everything he could to help save himself - when his solo trip circumnavigating New Zealand turned to potential disaster.' Maritime NZ.
